Andrea Arnold Takes On Wuthering Heights

Brit director Andrea Arnold made waves last year with her gritty Essex drama Fish Tank, but now she’ll be taking on a classic.

Variety has announced that Arnold will sign on to direct an adaptation on Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights.

Set on the wild Yorkshire moors, it’s based around the family drama and love trinagle between Cathy Earnshaw, the sensible Edgar and passionate Heathcliff.

The production has been running less than smoothly for a while now with several directors and actresses in line for parts only to change their minds. John Maybury, director of Edge Of Love, had previously been attached as had Natalie Portman.

I’m kind of happy that Natalie will be skipping another role where she needs an English accent.

Arnold has thus far only directed material that she’s written herself but now she’ll be taking on an adaptation by Olivia Hetreed, writer of Girl With A Pearl Earring.

Mel Gibson Makes ‘Big, Wacky Viking Epic’

Mel Gibson is no stranger to swinging an axe around and drinking a lot so we weren’t too surprised when we heard that he’s next directing job will be on a viking movie.

In a recent press conference for Edge of Darkness, Gibson revealed some details about the project.

“I think it’s going to be in the English that would have been spoken back then, and Old Norse.”

Any chance you could make a film in English, Mel? Not that I don’t love dead languages but this will be your third, give us a break. Leonardo Di Caprio is also attached to star in the project but we’re guessing he’ll be on the side of the Brits, we can’t really picture him on a longboat storming British shores.

Gibson told Collider.com, “…But that was the first big, epic, wacky idea I ever had was to show Viking real.”

“I want a Viking to scare you. I don’t want a Viking to say, “I’m going to die with a sword in my hand.” I don’t want to hear that. It pulls the rug out from under you. I want to see somebody who I have never seen before speaking low guttural German who scares the living shit out of me coming up to my house. What is that like? What would that have been like?”

Fair enough; scary speaking, axe wielding vikings it is.

Hoult Joins Mad Max 4

Skin’s star Nicholas Hoult is rumoured to be appearing in the next instalment of the Mad Max series.

Hoult, recently nominated for a BAFTA Rising Star award , has apparently signed on to star opposite Charlize Theron and Bronson’s Tom Hardy.

The original movies starred Mel Gibson and were set in a dystopian future where he was still attractive.

According to the Herald Sun, the new movie will is tentatively titled Fury Road which is said to be set shortly after the events of Beyond Thunderdome, the third film in the series. The project has been stuck in development hell since the original trilogy ended in 1985, talk about taking your time.

Little else is known about the film and still no word as to whether Mel Gibson will be involved and even though he may not act, he could still turn up as the director.

You can next see Hoult in the upcoming A Single Man with Colin Firth and Clash of The Titans.

Golden Globes: And The Winner Is…

Last night Hollywood’s elite graced the red carpet of the Golden Globe awards to accept statues for film and TV. Hosted by Ricky Gervais, things went smoothly with no tantrums or fisticuffs and not even a trip on the red carpet. Damn it.

Most winners were to be expected but the race for best actress in a film was probably the most anticipated.

Sandra Bullock was twice nominated for The Proposal and The Blind Side, going up against An Education’s Carey Mulligan and Julie & Julia’s Meryl Streep.

It’s not often that people get to say that they beat Meryl but Sandra managed to pull it off, beating Meryl and winning for The Blind Side, despite Meryl also being nominated for It’s Complicated.

It came as no surprised that Avatar and James Cameron picked up best film and best director, although many would say others were more deserving *cough* Kathryn Bigelow*. Predictably, Up took away two gongs for best original score and best animation, which is never exactly a heated race as it’s usually the categories with the slimmest pickings.

Robert Downey Jr. took best actor in a comedy or musical for Sherlock Holmes and made a few folks giggle in his acceptance speech, threatening to tear the place apart if they cut his speech off early. And while Inglourious Basterds was nominated a four times it only picked something up for best supporting actor for the magnificent Christoph Waltz.

In the TV portion of the ceremony, Glee managed to knock 30 Rock from its top spot by picking up best comedy or musical series. Gleeks everywhere rejoiced.

And Dexter star Michael C. Hall, who recently spoke about his battle with cancer, won for best actor in a drama series, beating out House’s Hugh Laurie and Mad Men’s Jon Hamm.

Amanda Seyfried Mad For Moore In New Movie

You may have seen the real star of Jennifer’s Body, Amanda Seyfried, in The Sun today as they reported on her upcoming film.

It seems that Seyfried is back to locking lips with ladies in Chloe, where she plays a young temptress hired by Julianne Moore to test husband Liam Neeson. But things start to get out of hand when Chloe starts changing the rules.

From the trailer I saw…whoah, it looks pretty steamy but I wasn’t that surprised; it is based on a French film.

While two ladies kissing might be enough for some films, Chloe has a scene where Seyfried parades around in her birthday suit. Sexy and can act – take note, Megan Fox.

But it isn’t just sexy Seyfried that people might be watching for. Liam Neeson had to hold up shooting after his wife Natasha died in a tragic skiing accident and when a tragedy like that strikes people will be watching for tell-tale signs in the performance.

Peter Sarsgaard To Play Green Lantern Villain

I think we were all excited when we heard that man candy, Ryan Reynolds, would be donning a tight green costume to play DC superhero, The Green Lantern.

But I got my panties in a real twist when we heard that An Education’s Peter Sarsgaard would be playing the Lantern’s villain, Hector Hammond.

HeatVisionBlog.com describe Hector’s backstory as, ‘Dr. Hector Hammond, the pathologist son of a senator who is seen as a disappointment in his father’s eyes. He becomes infused with psychic powers when he discovers a meteor.’

Previous reports indicated that the villain of the piece would be Sinestro. Either it will be a two villain movie like the Nolan’s Batman movies or Sinestro’s out of the picture.

I don’t mind either way though because it’s in safe hands with Casino Royale director, Martin Campbell. Though the production isn’t exactly moving at a fast pace, it’s better than rushing it.

GI Joe 2 Gets Moving

80’s cartoon abomination movie, GI Joe, has a confirmed sequel that’s gearing up for production. Lock the doors and windows and go down to the bomb shelter; the apocalypse is clearly coming.

Reports today indicate that Zombieland’s writers, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, are in talks with studios over the script. That’s something at least. These guys are also signed up to write the upcoming Deadpool movie and Zombieland 2.

Could these boys save GI Joe from being a pile of poop? I hope so, ’cause at this point, it can really only get better. Star of soon to be franchise, Channing Tatum admitted to HitFX that, not only was he not really in the loop in terms of production, but that the first movie’s script was definitely rushed due to the writer’s strike.

Tell us something we don’t know, Tatum.

BAFTA Announce Rising Star Nominees

Today BAFTA released the nominees for the Orange Rising Star award which is voted for by the general public.

Last year’s winner Noel Clarke, writer and star of Kidulthood and Adulthood, announced who this year’s lucky few are.

Zombieland’s Jesse Eisenberg and Twilight’s Kristen Stewart represent the US while the upcoming A Prophet’s Tahar Rahim waves the flag for the French.

An Education’s Carey Mulligan and Skin’s Nicholas Hoult do us Brits proud. I was kind of hoping that Nowhere Boy’s Aaron Johnson would also be in the running, but hey, you can’t win ‘em all.

You might not think Hoult has been up to much since his stint in Skins but he’ll be appearing in the upcoming A Single Man with Colin Firth and Clash Of The Titans. Not bad.

You can vote for your favourite by checking out the official BAFTA Rising Star site.

Tom Hanks Back In The Director’s chair

Hollywood’s favourite everyman, Tom Hanks, will takes a step back behind the camera.

He hasn’t directed a film since That Thing You Do! in 1996 but reports today indicate that he will write and direct Larry Crowne, and it seems that Hanks will star alongside Julia Roberts, reuniting the pair from Charlie Wilson’s War.

DeadlineHollywood reports that ‘Hanks will play the title character, a man forced to reinvent himself and find a new career as he navigates the second act of his life.’ Could be good, especially with Hanks showcasing his eye for directing once more.

Hanks didn’t turn away from the behind the scenes work completely though, he’s been a busy bee, producing Mamma Mia!, Where The Wild Things Are and TV’s Big Love.

Don’t leave it so long next time, Tom.

More Fast And Furious Movies Coming Soon

It seems that one of the gents on our sexy ugly list has announced that he’s got some movies coming up.

Vin Diesel has updated his facebook page, telling the world that there will be two more The Fast And The Furious movies. The studio have apparently approached him with two films that will follow directly on from last year’s Fast and Furious.

“If 2009’s Fast and Furious was chapter one, what writer Chris Morgan just delivered is Chapter 2 and Chapter 3.”

While I wondered what on Earth they could call the next two films, Vin wrote, “I have never been submitted a two story saga from a studio before… it is very exciting, and shows a commitment level that is hard not to respond to.”

Then I wet myself at the thought of F&F movies as a saga. It’s a franchise, a cheap, exciting, car based franchise. While I’m pretty sure Paul Walker won’t give up the chance to earn some dollars, we all know that Michelle Rodriguez won’t be returning after her character’s death in Fast And Furious. No word on Jordana Brewster though she’s not up to much right now, just doing a few episodes of Chuck.

“Excited about the sexy locations the filming of this saga would take us…this novel-like story, that has twists and unexpected turns that is authentic, truthful and challenging to the characters.” Pretension, thy name is Diesel.
