Diagnosis Death Review: Flatlining

DIAGNOSIS DEATH: Available on DVD from Monday 3rd August 2009

It may be billed as a B-movie, but in reality, this is more like a C movie.

Everyone loves a trashy horror but this one takes itself a little too seriously and ends up worse off because of it.

The leads are slightly lecherous teacher, Andre, and hot, 18 year old, Juliet, who looks like a young Xena. Trapped in a hospital while they trial cancer treatments, the two start seeing visions of a dead writer and her son and as the visions increase, the ward nurse comes under suspicion. Do It!

The Ugly Truth Review: The Lie’s Not So Pretty Either

THE UGLY TRUTH: On General Release Friday 7th August 2009

News flash: men and women are different!

You run and tell the neighbours while I alert the media!

In The Ugly Truth, Gerard Butler plays chauvinistic TV personality, Mike, while Katherine Heigl plays tightly wound TV producer, Abby.

When Mike is hired by Abby’s station and winds up taking over her show, she enlists him to help her get with her gorgeous neighbour, Colin. These characters are classic screwball ones and that’s just what the movie felt like: a wacky screwball comedy but with none of the class. This movie is American Pie for 30 year olds, which sounds good if you enjoyed American Pie but you may as well go re-watch that than see The Ugly Truth.
Do It!

Mesrine – Killer Instinct Review: The French Connection

MESRINE – KILLER INSTINCT: On General Release Friday 7th August 2009

Vincent Cassel is a man who doesn’t have to say a word for you to know that he’s French.

Those eyes, that tash, that swagger – my pants fell off the second he appeared on screen.

This skill is essential to play the seductive criminal Jacques Mesrine; legend in France and Quebec, but unless you paid attention in French or history class, you probably won’t know about him. He was a gangster, bank robber, kidnapper and all around smooth criminal. Cassel isn’t hugely known to Western audiences either, but you may recognise him from Ocean’s Twelve and Thirteen. He’s a talented actor whose Jacques is attractive but also violent and unpredictable.

After his time in the army, Jacques returns to France and joins up with local gangster boss, Guido, played by Gerard ‘Bogus’ Depardieu. His hot, young Spanish wife might look familiar too (if you’re a fan of crappy movies) as she played chief vampire bride, Aleera, in Van Helsing. Do It!

Flight Of The Conchords Season 2 DVD Review: The Difficult Second Album

FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS SEASON 2 DVD: On general release Monday 3rd August 2009

If you saw the first series of this New Zealand/New York musical show then you were probably excited for the second series.

However, if you saw the second series then you were probably a bit disappointed.

I wouldn’t like to call to Conchords a one hit wonder, but there was a certain magic about the first season; the cheapness/rubishness of it, the offbeat humour and catchy comedy folk songs. But Bret McKenzie and Jermaine Clement don’t seem to have been able to replicate that magic.

Bret and Jermaine continue their musical misadventures in New York with their hapless manager, Murray and their one psychotic fan, Mel. Murray and Mel get much more involved in the show this time around which fleshes out what could otherwise be a bit of a flat show. Do It!
