Prince Of Persia Review: To 3D Or Not To 3D?

PRINCE OF PERSIA – SANDS OF TIME: On General Release From Friday 21st May

The question that’s been following Prince of Persia around like a black cloud of volcanic ash is whether or not it’ll be another sub-standard video game movie. Well it is and it isn’t. The impressive stunt work, epic scale and appealing lead actors make it easily the best video game adaptation we’ve ever had, but as a film in its own right it falls a little short of being great.

Perhaps it’s for hardcore fans to decide but as far as I could see, the only aspect of the computer game that made an impression was Prince Dastan’s unique fighting style and a world building that only Jerry Bruckheimer could bring to the big screen.

The movie begins with young street rat, Dastan, impressing the King of Persia with his bravery and rooftop running skills. Apparently these are enough to get him adopted into the Royal household. Do It!

Friends With Benefits Cast Just Keeps Growing

I hadn’t paid much attention to Friends With Benefits, mostly because any news about it comes out on days I dust the Breadline broom cupboard. But after looking at the existing cast and the latest additons, I’m on board.

Though the official title is actually ‘Untitled Ivan Reitman Comedy’, as he is the director, everyone knows the project by it’s former name Friends With Benefits, so that’s what I’m going with. The title problem is down to the fact that there’s another project with the same name in production at the moment starring Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake which is helmed by Will Gluck.

Anywho, Reitman’s version is shaping up to be the more interesting movie just by the casting alone. Natalie Portman, Ashton Kutcher, Olivia Thirlby are already on board but now What Happens In Vegas star Lake Bell and comedian Guy Branum have signed up, according to Variety.

You might remember Lake from stealing pretty much every Vegas scene she was in along with Hot Tub Time Machine star Rob Corddry. Benefits will also be Chelsea Lately regular Guy Branum’s first movie role and hopefully it’ll be the start of big things for the funnyman.

Colin Farrell Joins Fright Night Remake

The remake of the classic camp horror Fright Night is gearing up for production as Colin Farrell joins the cast.

According to Deadline Hollywood, the Ondine star has signed up to play the smooth talking vampire-next-door that was played by Chris Sarandon in the 1985 original.

In the role of the heroic teen who spots the vampire for what he really is will be Star Trek’s Anton Yelchin and Toni Collette will play his mother.

Farrell’s also attached to David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis with Marion Cotillard and has joined the cast of Horrible Bosses with Jennifer Aniston.

Brad Pitt Gets The Tiger

After two previous failed attempts at working together, it looks like Brad Pitt and Darren Aronofsky have agreed on a project they can stick to.

The first time these two tried to get something made was The Fountain when Pitt was supposed to play the lead in the fantastical epic romance but walked instead. The second time was The Fighter but both of them backed out.

Variety are reporting that The Tiger is the project that will bring the pair together again and hopefully everything will work out because it sounds like an interesting project.

It’s based on the upcoming non-fiction novel by John Vaillant and variety describes the film as taking place, ‘on the Siberian plain where human development is encroaching on the tigers habitat – and one tiger turns on the intruders. As townspeople are tracked and hunted with an almost supernatural power, a conservation-minded game warden must face down the tiger.’

Babel scribe Guillermo Arriaga is set to pen the script even though the novel won’t be released until August. Counting your chickens, Pitt?

Sucker Punch Will Get IMAX Release

2011 will see Sucker Punch, a sexy, psychological action romp, released in 3D and now it’s confirmed that it’ll be getting the IMAX treatment, according to Empire. The news that it’ll be in the IMAX really is to be expected given Snyder’s previous success with 300 and Watchmen.

Snyder’s style naturally lends itself to 3D and the IMAX with the story often being overshadowed by visuals, but can he break the habit with Sucker Punch? The film revolves around young girls being trapped in an asylum and fighting to distinguish fantasy from reality with Vanessa Hudgens, Emily Browning, Jenna Malone and Mad Men’s Jon Hamm starring.

Well Snyder’s still got some time before he decides how he’s going to handle it – Legend Of The Guardians will be released in 2010 with Snyder once again delving into 3D.

But after Warner Bros. made the decision to have all of their ‘tent-pole’ movies in 3D, is the IMAX the next step?

While we’re waiting for Sucker Punch to hit our screens, here’s a piece of concept art designed by Alex Pardee. If you were lucky enough to be at the San Diego Comicon last year then you could have gotten it on a t-shirt. If you weren’t then hard cheese.

Two New Images From Twilight: Eclipse

As the Summer months inch closer, you would think that I’d be working on building up my tan but in honour of Twilight: Eclipse, I’m rocking the pasty skin this year.

OK, I’m already pasty and I’m too lazy to tan properly but let’s just say it’s down to Twilight.

Anyway, I’ve got two new images to show you from the upcoming instalment of the series that will see vampire Edward and Bella, his lady love, fending off an army of new vampires.

Victoria’s back on the prowl looking for revenge and the Volturi are still hanging around, waiting for Bella to choose whether she’s going to stay human or become a vamp herself.

The images are courtesy of Movieweb.com and first up we’ve got the Cullen’s hanging out, wearing their ever-present blue denim jeans and looking tense.

New Promo Images From Tron: Legacy

I know we’ll have to wait until December to actually see Disney’s Tron Legacy but I can’t help but get excited over the smallest details of this movie right now.

I found some new promotional pictures for what could be the movie’s villain over on science fiction blog io9. If you weren’t already convinced that the production has been taken up a couple of notches then check out these images. The suits look amazing and I can’t wait to see them zipping around on the new badass lightcycles.

Weinstein’s Dimension Films Pushes On With Mummy Project

It looks like all the classic movies are making their comebacks in the next few years as we’ve already heard about two Dracula reboots, two Frankenstein re-tellings and a Wolfman, I guess it was just a matter of time before the Mummy popped again.

It’s not like we haven’t seen one in a while – we last saw one in 2008 in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Needless to say, I’m in the mood for a revamp of the classic Egyptian horror icon.

Which is just as well because Bob Weinstein’s Dimension Films are in the early stages of putting a mummy’s curse project together. But instead of the usual horror set up where a couple of bright young things are tormented by an unstoppable villain, it’s apparently going to be in the style of last year’s low-budget horror Paranormal Activity.

According to the LA Times, Weinstein has Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego in final negotiations to write and direct the movie. In these financially strained times, the project is going the Paranormal route in an effort to save money. Not only will they be able to jump on the unseen horror bandwagon but also because special effects like the ones seen in the Brendan Fraser franchise are costly.

The movie is currently called The Mummy Archives but I wouldn’t hold my breath on that title remaining. The only big question is that if Weinstein wants to cash in on the low-budget horror, does this mean he’s opting out of 3D?

The Back-Up Plan Review: A Little Premature

THE BACK-UP PLAN: On General Release Friday 7th May

I think that by now we all know about Jennifer Lopez’s luck allergy when it comes to the films she chooses. Many of her features are either barely passable, guilty pleasures or throat-slittingly awful and after a break from moviemaking, it looks like Jenny from the block still hasn’t learned her lesson.

The Back-Up Plan sees Lopez as Zoe, a desperate woman whose lack of a man has left her turning to artificial insemination in order to get herself a baby. But as she leaves the clinic she has a meet cute with handsome market trader Stan (Alex O’Loughlin). Do It!
