Salt Review: True Grit

SALT (12A): On General Release Friday 20th August

While I can’t say that I was awaiting Angelina Jolie’s latest outing with bated breath, I was intrigued by the fact that Salt was originally intended to be a Tom Cruise vehicle.

Tom’s waning box office pulling-power aside, this sex-swap was a smart move by writer Kurt Wimmer (Equilibrium) as it gives Jolie the chance to prove that she can lay the smack-down on just as many henchmen as the boys can. Having her rather than him as the duplicitous CIA agent Evelyn Salt, Wimmer gives a fresh angle to a plot that could easily have been a boring instalment of the Bourne series. Salt also sees the welcome return of Russian villains to the cinema after a long period in which Middle Eastern terrorists were severely over-worked. Do It!

Tinkerbell & The Great Fairy Rescue Review: Fairy Good

TINKERBELL AND THE GREAT FAIRY RESCUE (U): On General Release Friday 13th August And On DVD 21st September

Usually, a spin-off such as this would only appear as a straight-to-DVD movie, but due to the amazing sales in the UK, Tinkerbell and the Great Fairy Rescue will see Peter Pan’s favourite fairy get a cinematic release; the first of the Disney fairies to be granted one.

Tinkerbell, as any Pan fan will know, is a mischievous but resourceful individual who always manages to get herself into trouble. On the first day of Fairy Camp, Tink (Mae Whitman) gets distracted by a passing car and goes to investigate, dragging friend Vidia (Pamela Adlon) along for the ride. The car belongs to Dr. Griffiths (Michael Sheen) and his daughter Lizzie (Lauren Mote) who accidentally captures Tinkerbell. Do It!

Step Up 3D Review: Take A Step Down, Would Ya?

STEP UP 3D (12A): On General Release From Friday 6th August

Having been a teenager until not so long ago, I was occupying a front row seat for many of dance movies that have found their way to the big screen over the last decade. In that time I’ve been considering whether or not I can respect a movie that boasts a rubbish story but really good dancing.

I’ve come to the conclusion that no – I bloody can’t.

It’s not acceptable for several of these dance movies to all have exactly the same plot (they need to raise money) as well as crap acting but be saved by their dance-floor acrobatics. The Red Shoes managed to produce enough skills to pay the bills in the acting and story department, as well as amazing dance sequences. Save The Last Dance did it as well, so what the hell happened to the rest of them? Do It!

San Diego Comic Con 2010 Round-up

Well, I may not have been there but that’s not going to stop me from bringing you as many juicy titbits of information from the 2010 San Diego Comic Con as I can! Fans who attended the convention were treated to all kinds of goodies: exclusive footage from upcoming films and TV shows, meet and greets with the stars, panel talks and getting to see all the props and merch that the studios were pimping out.

The exclusive videos – also known as a sizzle reels – were just for the convention goers but now some of them are available online so I waited until I had something good to show you. Not every video is currently available but as soon as I get it, you’ll get it. There are a tonne of panels at the SDCC so I’ve cherrypicked the best to bring you our SDCC 2010 roundup, who knows, maybe next year I’ll actually be there..

MEGAMIND

DreamWorks Animation’s next big thing is Megamind which follows a supervillain who accidentally kills off his nemesis, the heroic Metro Man. Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill are providing the vocal talent and it looks like Will got a little too excited to be at Comic Con and donned a very spiffy Megamind costume.

Tina and Jonah joined him on stage and ribbed him for dressing up as he lamented his decision, ‘”I feel a little bit like a turd up here.”’

Aside from the cast’s comedy stylings, the audience were treated to some tasty 3D footage that you can check out right now, courtesy of Yahoo! Movies.

THOR

Marvel heroes were out in force this year and one of the biggest came in the shape of Thor. With the exception of Anthony Hopkins, the whole cast turned out for the panel including Chris Hemsworth, Clark Gregg, Natalie Portman, Kat Dennings and director Kenneth Brannagh.

Audience members were treated to the following clip in 3D where they could fully appreciate the bulging biceps Chris Hemsworth was rocking. There’s been some copyright issues surrounding the video and so its been fecking difficult to find the comicon footage. So difficult in fact that I couldn’t actually do it. Sorry. Do It!

‘Lost’ Writer Working On Alien Prequel Script

I’m not usually the one to praise a prequel but the forthcoming one for the Alien series has me pleased as punch. OK, The Thing prequel also has me pretty excited too but that’s it.

The Alien movie has won me over because it’s telling the story of the mysterious Space Jockey, also known as the dead guy who had his chest blown out from the inside. Granted, The Thing prequel has a similar premise but that just goes to show how good 70s sci-fi was – always leaving us wanting more.

Anyhow, today’s news is that Damon Lindelof, writer of Lost, Cowboys and Aliens and the next Star Trek movie, has been hired to rewrite the script. Deadline Hollywood are reporting that Lindelof has signed a deal that would see him working with Ridley Scott to firm up the script, something that may tempt Scott into directing the film.

Fans are champing at the bit to see Scott back in the driving seat and bringing the series back to it’s roots and apparently the meeting between him and Lindelof has sparked some interesting ideas. Lindelof has certainly proved that his writing is up to snuff and his geek credibility is on the up but writing an Alien movie is no walk in the park, right Joss Whedon?

UK Film Council Chairman Speaks Out

After the recent boneheaded decision to abolish the UK Film Council, the chairman, Tim Bevan, issued a statement on the Council’s official website.

Naturally, Bevan is angered by the decision but he also indicates that this will effect the film industry for years to come.

“Abolishing the most successful film support organisation the UK has ever had is a bad decision, imposed without any consultation or evaluation. People will rightly look back on today’s announcement and say it was a big mistake, driven by short-term thinking and political expediency. British film, which is one of the UK’s more successful growth industries, deserves better.

“Our immediate priority now is to press the Government to confirm that the funding levels and core functions that are needed to underpin British film are locked-in, especially at a time when filmmakers and film companies need more support than ever as they make the challenging transition into the digital age. To that end, we will work with the DCMS over the summer to identify how they can guarantee both continuity and safe harbour for British film.”

Well said, Sir. He’s not the only one that’s feeling disheartened by the Government’s decision. Many filmmakers and journalists are confused as to how the industry will cope with a structured financing body. Mike Goodridge, editor of Screen International had this to say,

“It is a stunning blind side and a shocking blow. It feels like a terrible betrayal of the industry. The UK Film Council has done a good job of slimming itself down so it is a disturbing day.

The UK Film Council has spent the last 10 years establishing the value of film to the economy and this feels like a dismantling of that by the government.”

If you’re wondering what on Earth the UK Film Council does exactly, well, for a start it’s invested over £160 million of Lottery funding into over 900 UK films since it’s creation in 2000. That’s a much needed helping hand to our industry that we’re now without, thanks a bunch ConDems.

It’s helped to fund films like Bend it like Beckham, The Constant Gardener, Fish Tank, Gosford Park, Happy-Go-Lucky, In the Loop, The Last King of Scotland, Nowhere Boy, St Trinian’s, This is England, and Streetdance 3D, the UK’s first 3D film.

RoboCop Remake Officially Cancelled

While Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan takes flight at the Venice Film Festival this year, his proposed remake of RoboCop gets cancelled according to Moviehole.

According to their source at MGM, the cancellation is down to the studios financial troubles. The insider said of the project, “Gone. Kaput. Cancelled. It was one of the first casualties.” Ouch. So times are really tough at MGM and perhaps this film and others could have been saved by the merger that might have been between MGM and Lionsgate, now I guess we’ll never know.

By the sounds of it, MGM aren’t the only ones who had given up on the idea of another RoboCop.

“[Darren] has lost interest anyway, I believe. Think we’re all just going to have to be happy with the three RoboCop movies that are out there.”

The source also told Moviehole that there had been plans to put another Amityville Horror and Rocky movie into production but ‘not necessarily with Sylvester Stallone’. We’re not really sure that would work out financially for the studio and if people were happy with three RoboCop movies then I think we’re good with six Rocky movies.

Video: First Look At David Fincher’s The Goon

Fans of Eric Powell’s comic book series will already be on The Goon bandwagon but for those not in the know, it’s got zombies, robots, ghosts, vampires and skunk-apes. Of course, all this won’t be in the movie. OK, I don’t actually know what will be in the movie because the plot is being kept tightly under wraps.

All I can say is that the story follows Goon, a hulk of a thing whose shady dealings have gotten him a lot of enemies but he’s still got one friend, Franky, at his side.

Thankfully, at this years San Diego Comic Con, some footage was released from the film adaptation by David Fincher that will see a release later this year. Take a look.

Guess Who I Interviewed…Vincenzo Natali!

I caught up with Vincenzo Natali, director of new sci-fi drama Splice, and chatted to him about his creepy new film, his adaptation of Neuromancer and his feelings towards the burgeoning format of 3D. He was an absolute pleasure to talk to and, as you’ll see, quite a chatty chap…

Vincenzo, you wrote Splice with two other people, was that a good experience?

It was great, thank God for my partners or I’d still be writing. If I didn’t have Doug [Taylor] and Antoinette [Terry Bryant] I would never have finished the script! Do It!

Sweet Dreams! Best Movie Dream Sequences!

In honour of Christopher Nolan’s Inception, one of the biggest movies of the year, i’ve decided to sink into the cinematic land of nod to take a look at some of the best movie dreams.

They say that Hollywood is where dreams can come true and by golly they were right. So I poured over a bunch of movies in which characters are visited by the sandman and it actually helped us overcome our own recurring dream/nightmare – Claudia Winkleman presenting Film 2010.

It sure has been a cathartic exercise here in the Breadline broom cupboard and now I’d like to share my experiences with you by giving you the rundown of best dream sequences in movies. Enjoy.

AMERICAN BEAUTY

After seeing Kevin Spacey practically jizzing in his pants over Mena Suvari in American Beauty, we never looked at a rose in the same way. His character, Lester Burnham, becomes fixated on the young temptress and starts having rose-based fantasies about her. Technically, these are sex fantasies but we’re classing them as daydreams, so just suck it up and enjoy.

Do It!
